Roman Reigns is a current professional wrestler for the WWE and was a member of a faction called The Shield. Unprofessional Fridays: 06/21/19. Roman Reigns is a current professional wrestler for the WWE and was a member of a faction called The Shield. Short summary describing this character. WWE seems intent on running back the old wrestler versus authority style of storyline with Roman Reigns. Unfortunately, that’s just never going to work. A downtrodden or underappreciated.

What’s the story?

Roman Reigns was there backstage at last night’s RAW but never showed up in front of the audience, even after the show went off the air.

In case you didn’t know...

Roman Reigns lost his brother Matt ‘Rosey’ Anoa’i last week and had the weekend off from WWE programming to attend the funeral.

When we last saw Roman, he was being carried away by EMT after being attacked by Braun Strowman who took the fight backstage. Strowman wasn’t satisfied with just flipping over Reign’s stretcher with him in it; the Monster Among Men proceeded to lift the entire ambulance that Reigns was in and turn it over on its side.

The heart of the matter:

After coming back from Rosey’s funeral, Roman Reigns was reportedly present backstage during Monday’s RAW telecast but never made an appearance in front of the audience, not even for a dark segment.

Reigns is clearly heartbroken after his brother’s untimely demise and WWE management chose to keep him off the show for this week before he faces Braun Strowman at Payback on Sunday.

What’s next?

Roman Reigns will appear on Payback to square things off with his attacker Braun Strowman this Sunday, a match that WWE has been setting up for a few weeks.

The match was initially rumoured to be a stretcher match but it was never confirmed by WWE. The match should be an interesting one no matter what the stipulations are.

Author’s take

Roman Reigns has had a good babyface run on RAW since The Shield broke up but maybe it is time to have him do a heel turn, as many fans and peers will agree.

Having him against Braun’s Monster character was a desperate attempt, in my opinion, to have Reigns get over with the fans but it has clearly backfired with the fans cheering on Braun throughout their segments.

WWE WrestleMania 34 has one of the most star-studded lineups in recent memory, a loaded card that is highlighted by Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns, John Cena vs. The Undertaker (we think), Ronda Rousey's debut match and the in-ring return of Daniel Bryan.WWE plans to keep Asuka undefeated until a match with Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35.' Asuka vs. Rousey would mark one of the biggest matches in the history of WWE's women's division, and of all the major matches WWE has had recently or could have in the near future, this dream match probably has the best chance of being the first women's match to main event WrestleMania.

That's why, much like Asuka has been booked to be so dominant, the same must be true for Rousey, who appears to be transferring her drawing power from UFC to WWE, where she is already helping to boost live event ticket sales and is featured as one of WWE's top sellers on WWEShop.com. Despite any hiccups she may have had in her short WWE run so far (and there have been plenty), Rousey's popularity seems to be translating well to WWE, and that should continue as long as the creative team remains firmly behind her.

Given all the buzz and excitement created by Rousey signing with WWE, it's unlikely WWE will pull the plug on her push anytime soon, and of course, that shouldn't even be a consideration unless she's a total flop as a pro wrestler. That scenario probably will never happen, and even if it does at some point later on, it's far too early for WWE to even think about a loss for Rousey, especially given that WrestleMania 34 will be her debut match.

Rousey and Kurt Angle should soundly defeat Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, and the lasting image of that match should be Stephanie either tapping out or being pinned by Rousey. Any other finish is a mistake that means WWE failed to capitalize on Rousey's initial momentum and has set her up for failure.

The Undertaker Retires After Losing To John Cena

One of the many ways WWE limited the drawing power of John Cena vs. The Undertaker is when it decided to book 'The Champ' like 'The Loser.'

Cena, after all, has lost most major matches he's been in since last summer, having been defeated by the likes of Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, Shinsuke Nakamura and Seth Rollins during that span. Although Cena is expected to take another lengthy hiatus after WrestleMania 34, he would benefit much more from defeating The Undertaker than vice versa, especially with the likelihood that the pay-per-view may mark the last time we ever see 'The Deadman' wrestle.

WWE already ruined the lure of The Undertaker's WrestleMania matches by having 'The Streak' end (and then having him lose a second time), and with his match quality taking a major nosedive during his last few WrestleMania matches, the writing is on the wall: It's time for The Undertaker to officially retire. There is no better and more believable star who should be given the honor of retiring The Undertaker than Cena, who is WWE's biggest star and its top draw.

With the recent booking of Cena doing him no favors and portraying him as a past-his-prime veteran, WWE needs to reverse course on that philosophy and ensure that he gets back on track with a WrestleMania victory, assuming his match with Undertaker actually takes place. There is still money to be made with Cena, WWE's clear-cut No. 1 merchandise mover, while the company's bevy of part-timers, including the likes of Triple H, Kurt Angle and Randy Orton, has now made Undertaker expendable.

Especially with 'The Phenom' ranking among WWE's highest paid stars, according to FORBES, despite typically only working one match per year, it would be better off using that money elsewhere at a time when supposed attractions aren't really moving the needle anyway.

Daniel Bryan Transitions From GM To Wrestler

If it wasn't already clear by the raucous crowd reactions Daniel Bryan received even as a non-wrestling GM, it should be painfully obvious now that he is one of the most popular stars in WWE, if not the most popular.

After surprisingly being cleared to return to the ring, Bryan gives SmackDown another top star that it has desperately needed for quite a while now, and it's already benefiting the blue brand. The SmackDown episode featuring Bryan's announcement of his in-ring return resulted in the show doing its best viewership in nearly a year and one of the best numbers ever since the show moved to a live Tuesday format in 2016, while his return also helped boost WrestleMania ticket sales.

The possibility of Bryan wrestling again has been one of the most talked about topics among wrestling fans for the last few years, and with Bryan already proving in the past that he can move a ton of merchandise, WWE now has another star who can join the likes of Cena and Reigns as top merchandise sellers. That, of course, is assuming that Bryan is removed from his role as GM (so he's not overexposed by being both a wrestler and authority figure) and is simply booked as a WWE superstar going forward.

That journey should begin at WrestleMania 34, when he and Shane McMahon take on Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn as a way for WWE to start transitioning Bryan out of his GM role in order to let him concentrate on wrestling. With Bryan expected to wrestle as much as 60 to 80 times per year (or possibly even more than that) going forward, the best role for him is to be used similar to a star like Randy Orton, who is somewhere in between a part-timer and full-timer but is consistently a part of WWE's programming.

AJ Styles Passes The Torch To Shinsuke Nakamura

There has been a lot of speculation that AJ Styles could be moving to Raw after WrestleMania 34 as those rumors have run rampant since before WrestleMania 33.

If that is indeed the case, then the outcomes of Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura is a no-brainer: Styles must lose and pass the torch to 'The Artist.' Like Styles, Nakamura continues to demonstrate that he is one of WWE's most popular stars, and in fact, Google search data indicated that he was indeed WWE's most popular new star to debut on the main roster in 2017. That should be rather obvious by listening to the roof-rattling reactions Nakamura generates, which have made him a big hit in WWE, especially among its most diehard fans.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletternoted last year that Nakamura was generating strong viewership among male fans on SmackDown, and given that he was also a top draw on YouTube, that really shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Nakamura has the coolness and 'it factor' that WWE always wants out of its top stars, and with the popularity of New Japan Pro-Wrestling (where Nakamura made a name for himself) exploding in the US, WWE will undoubtedly want to capitalize on that by going all the way with Nakamura.

With Styles possibly switching shows and with NJPW obviously on the rise, there may never be a more opportune time for WWE to crown its first officially recognized Japanese world champion at WrestleMania 34. That's when, judging by the trend continued by WrestleMania 33, there will be more people watching WrestleMania than ever before, making it the ideal moment to crown Nakamura the WWE Champion and establish him as the face of a new look SmackDown.

Brock Lesnar Loses On His Way Out

The latest reports indicate that Brock Lesnar is on his way out of WWE, .

According to the Wrestling Observer (h/t Cageside Seats), ' is leaning toward returning to UFC because WWE won’t let him fight in the Octagon while under contract to them again after he got bad press for his failed drug tests around UFC 200.' UFC President Dana White said just this week that Lesnar will indeed return to UFC (and wouldn't he know?), and with the speculation being that Lesnar will have to choose between the two, most seem to believe he's headed for an improbable UFC return.

Much like Undertaker, Lesnar is collecting a hefty paycheck (he was WWE's highest paid star last year) for a very minimal schedule, and with the quality of his performances dipping while he hasn't been moving the stagnant WWE Network subscriber count, WWE's best bet is to move on from 'The Beast,' possibly for good. As luck would have it, Lesnar will face Reigns in the presumed main event of WrestleMania 34, which is the perfect way to get the Universal Championship off of Lesnar on his way out.

Lesnar's contract reportedly expires the day of WrestleMania 34, and with Reigns establishing himself as one of WWE's best overall performers, there are certainly worse things than taking Raw's top title off a stale part-timer and putting it one of the hardest working full-timers in the company. Some fans surely won't like seeing Reigns crowned champion again, but with more and more indications that Lesnar is leaving, the creative team essentially has no other choice.

WWE must put the Universal Championship on Reigns, say goodbye to Lesnar and sit back and watch as Reigns continues his run as pro wrestling's most polarizing star.
