Surfboards are not your usual art canvas.
But then Jonathan Grange is a professional air brush artist with many colours to his palette.
His air brushing is not the sort that makes famous faces look younger or inserts the crazy into the mundane.
Jonathan uses a traditional airbrush hand-piece to create stunningly realistic wall murals. 'It's a dying art but I've mastered it,' he says.
He has painted many murals on municipal buildings for the former Rodney and North Shore councils. His underwater dolphins feature on a Manly dairy.
'That took me nine days to complete and I got a real buzz out of people coming up when I was there, seeing their reactions to the work and their faces light up.'

Surf art also features prominently in Jonathan's repertoire, stemming from his love of the surf and sea. His surf art boards are all hand-made from wood, with or without fins, and come in different shapes and sizes. They are airbrush painted with exquisite wave, surf and beach scenes. Several of them will be at the 8th annual Hibiscus Hospice Art Exhibition and Sale during Queen's Birthday Weekend.
Although fortunate enough to never have had any personal experience with loss, Jonathan believes the hospice is providing a valuable service in times of need. He will donate one of his works for Hibiscus Hospice to auction.
Living on the coast he's loved for more than 20 years, Jonathan draws a lot of inspiration from beach walks with wife Lisa.
But he also loves to rummage in the hospice shops for old books and memorabilia.
He combines his passion for art with making a living - doing commercial murals, van murals, stage backdrops, house painting and also specialises in creating themed children's rooms. One of his latest creations was an Egyptian theme.
Art exhibition organiser Vicki Lambert discovered Jonathan's talent after she commented on his attention to detail while he was doing some interior painting at her home. 'I'm precise because I'm an artist,' he said then.
His house painting experience will come in handy though when he donates his time to repaint the Estuary Art Centre walls after the exhibition artworks have been removed.
The display and sale starts on Friday, 9am till 4pm, and ends at 2pm Monday.
